가는 나라마다 투자 가치가 있는지 따져보고, 환 암시장은 꼭 가보는 그는 역시 투자자 기질을 타고 난 듯 하다.
투자원칙은 간단하지만, 그 원칙에 맞는지 살펴보는 그의 혜안은 정말로 뛰어나다. 저 여행은 거의 20년 전의 일이라, 지금 상황에서 살펴보면, 그도 틀리게 전망을 한 부분이 없지는 않고, 그도 실수가 있긴 했지만, 그와 같은 안목을 가질 수 있다는 것이 놀랍다.

조지 소로스와 함께 퀀텀 펀드를 창업 및 운용한 세계적인 투자자인 짐로저스가 부인과 함께 3년간 110여개국을 여행하면서, 각 나라에 대한 본인의 소견 및 투자자로서의 관점을 얘기하고 있는 책이다.
저자는 1990년에도 오토바이를 타고 세계 여행을 한 적이 있고, 당시의 경험과 비추어서 이번 세계 여행 때 세계가 어떻게 변했고, 본인의 전망이 어떤 것은 맞고 어떤 것은 틀렸는지 얘기하고 있다.
저자의 관점을 보면,
- 중국은 앞으로 크게 성장할 것이고, 투자적 가치도 상당히 매력적이다.
- 아프리카는 투자적 가치나 관광적 가치로도 매력적이다. 하지만, NGO와 같은 자선은 아프리카에 도움이 되지 못한다.
- 관료주의가 팽배해 있는 나라들(인도, 러시아, 사우디, 한국 등..)은 부패 지수가 높을 위험이 있고, 투자적 가치가 그리 높지 못하다.
- 여권과 비자로 입국을 제한하는 것은 경제와 세계 발전에 도움이 되지 못한다.
- 미국은 열정과 꿈이 있는 젊은이를 받아 들여야 한다.(다른 나라들도 마찬가지 임..)
대충 이렇다.
저자는 돈이 충분히 있는 사람이기 때문에, 비싼 차에 여러 사람을 고용하고, 왠만한 고난은 돈으로 해결하면서 다니긴 했지만, 저자와 비슷한 규모의 돈을 가진 사람들도 짐 로저스와 같은 모험 정신이 없는 것은 안타깝긴 하다.
나도 저런 모험 정신을 가지고 싶다는 생각을 들게 하는 책임.
